The 2025 NFL draft is just over a month away and the Detroit Lions just wrapped up free agency without going to get that big edge rusher that fans hoped they’d get. Don’t worry though, there could be one more opportunity to trade for a guy.
Pro Football Focus’ Bradley Locker put together a list of each team’s best trade assets ahead of the draft. While we don’t agree with their pick for the Lions, there’s one player on the list that makes some sense for Detroit. That’s Ravens edge rusher Odafe Oweh. Here’s Locker’s reasoning:
“Baltimore’s list of players going into a contract year is relatively steep, although many — Derrick Henry, Mark Andrews, and Kyle Van Noy — are over 28. Oweh, though, is a name to keep an eye on in that group for trade purposes…
“The former first-round pick has notched 109 pressures over the past two seasons on a 77.9 PFF pass-rushing grade, which ranks 21st among qualified edge defenders. While Oweh has been above average as both a pass rusher and a run defender, his play might not warrant a lucrative extension. The Ravens could face a crossroads with the 26-year-old heading into the draft.”
The former first-round pick has been a bit inconsistent for the Ravens since they took him with the 31st pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He had a pretty good 2024 with 55 pressures and 11 sacks, but he did that coming off the bench for the most part and he’s been a little hit-or-miss in Baltimore.
With all the deals that the Ravens are going to have to do, they could bail on Oweh in favor of drafting in a deep edge class and the Lions could take on the 26-year-old on his fifth-year option and work to extend him.
By the way, that extension, if the Lions chose to do it, wouldn’t come with a super-large price tag. Cap analyst Josh Queipo projected that if he were to get one this offseason, it would have been a three-year extension worth $46.5 million. Hutchinson is expected to get $150 million or more. So you see the price difference.
What would the trade cost the Lions? We put together this proposal that we think works out best for both teams.
Lions get: Odafe Oweh
Ravens get: 2025 fourth-round pick
It’s probably not what the Ravens maybe hoped they’d get back in a trade for a former first-round pick, but after all, this is a guy they’re unloading and he’s not been a starter for them. Plus the Lions would be the extending team here and they’re taking on all the risk.
